Candyman opens in 1st place with $22.4 million weekend take

Universal/MGM/Monkeypaw’s Candyman, which is a direct sequel to the 1992 original starring Tony Todd got off to a great late August start with $22.4M in it's opening weekend.

The R-rated slasher film, written by Jordan Peele and directed by “Captain Marvel 2” filmmaker Nia DaCosta, surpassed industry expectations despite fears the delta variant would keep people from going to the movies.

“Candyman” cost $25 million to produce — MGM financed and produced the film, while Universal handled marketing and distribution — and appears on track to become one of the rare pandemic-era releases to become profitable during its theatrical run.

“Nia DaCosta crafted an intense thriller that audiences responded to extraordinarily well this weekend. The debut of Candyman exceeded all industry expectations, and with the very positive audience reaction scores and a three-day holiday in our second weekend, we’re anticipating a strong theatrical run at the domestic box office,” exclaimed Universal’s Domestic Theatrical Distribution President Jim Orr.

Candyman stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Colman Domingo.

Jordan Peele's ‘Us’ exceeds expectations with $70 million opening weekend

By George L. Cook III African American Reports.

'Us', Jordan Peele's followup up to his 2017 hit 'Get Out' exceeded all expectations by grossing an estimated $70 million plus in its opening weekend.

Early projections varied from $40 to $60 million. The $70 million weekend was an outstanding launch for the film which had a budget of $20 million.

'Us’ now has the third highest grossing horror film weekend behind only "It" which opened with $123.4 million and "Halloween (2018)" which launched with 76.2 million.

'Us’ will pass the $100 mark and should have no problem reaching and $150 million mark. The questions are with the movie's polarizing ending does it gross more than the $176 million 'Get Out' made or does it pass $200 million domestically because of repeated viewings by those trying to decipher the ending?

'Us’ was by written, produced, and directed by Jordan Peele.

The movie stars Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph, and Evan Alex .

Jordan Peele Announces New Horror Film ‘Us’

Jordan Peele is coming back with a new horror film! The Academy Award-winning filmmaker recently announced that his forthcoming project, Us, will be heading to theaters early next year.
Peele made the announcement on Twitter late Tuesday night (May 8). The film poster displays black and white silhouettes of two boys that appear to be African American. While the poster is fairly simple, it still carries a haunting effect.

There is little information regarding the film’s plot and story line, but there are several reports claiming the film is looking to include an all-star cast. Peele is reportedly eying Black Panther’s Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke, as well as The Handmaid’s Tale star Elisabeth Moss, according to The Hollywood Reporter. If those contracts are signed, Nyong’o and Duke will reportedly portray one couple, while Moss will play one half of another couple.

Us will be Peele’s first feature film since his breakout blockbuster Get Out. Following its release in Feb. 2017, the racially-charged horror film quickly became a pop culture phenomenon and cleaned up at the awards shows. Peele also became the first black man to win an Academy Award for Best Screenplay.

The movie poster does not have a specific date, but Universal Pictures has reportedly has slated the picture for Mar. 15, 2019, THR reports. Check out the poster below, and stay tuned for more updates.

Jordan Peele wins top Writers Guild Award for 'Get Out' screenplay

Jordan Peele took home the top prize for best original screenplay (film) Sunday evening at the Writers Guild Awards for his racially conscious film "Get Out."

The win marks Peele's latest award in a string of prizes, further cementing his place as a strong contender for next month's Academy Awards.

Peele, who said he began writing "Get Out" in 2008, dedicated part of his acceptance speech to other writers.

"This was a passion project. It was something that I put my love into, I put my soul into, so getting this from you means so much," Peele said of the film, a horror-satire exploring an interracial relationship gone wrong. "Keep taking chances, take big risks, put your love into it. It does pay off."

The writer and first-time director beat out other strong contenders "The Shape of Water," "The Big Sick," "Lady Bird" and "I, Tonya."

‘Get Out’s Jordan Peele Responds To Golden Globes Category

The decision by Jordan Peele, Blumhouse and Universal to submit their film Get Out in the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category at the Golden Globes this year has created many questions from his fanbase. Here, Peele explains why the decision was made:

The most rewarding part of making “Get Out” is the conversations the film has inspired.

When I originally heard the idea of placing it in the comedy category it didn’t register to me as an issue. I missed it. There’s no category for social thriller. So what? I moved on.

I made this movie for the loyal black horror fans who have been underrepresented for years. When people began standing up for my voice, it meant a lot. “Get Out” doesn’t just belong to me any more, now it belongs to everyone.

The reason for the visceral response to this movie being called a comedy is that we are still living in a time in which African American cries for justice aren’t being taken seriously. It’s important to acknowledge that though there are funny moments, the systemic racism that the movie is about is very real. More than anything, it shows me that film can be a force for change. At the end of the day, call “Get Out” horror, comedy, drama, action or documentary, I don’t care. Whatever you call it, just know it’s our truth.

Jordan Peele to Receive CinemaCon Director of the Year Award

Jordan Peele, the breakthrough writer/director of Universal Pictures’ smash “Get Out,” will receive the “CinemaCon® Director of the Year,” it was announced today by CinemaCon Managing Director, Mitch Neuhauser. CinemaCon, the official convention of The National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO), will be held March 27-30, 2017 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Peele will be presented with this special honor at the “CinemaCon Big Screen Achievement Awards” ceremony, which takes place on the evening of Thursday, March 30, at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, hosted by the Coca-Cola Company, the official presenting sponsor of CinemaCon.

“With the phenomenon known as ‘Get Out,” Jordan Peele has instantaneously become a force to reckon with as a gifted and enormously talented director and filmmaker,” noted Neuhauser. “He has audiences and critics around the globe enamored and spellbound, dare I say hypnotized, with his wildly inventive directorial debut, and we are ecstatic to be honoring him as this year’s ‘Director of the Year.’”

In Universal Pictures’ “Get Out,” a speculative thriller from Blumhouse and the mind of Jordan Peele, when a young African-American man visits his white girlfriend’s family estate, he becomes ensnared in a more sinister real reason for the invitation.

Now that Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and his girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams), have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy (Catherine Keener) and Dean (Bradley Whitford).

At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined.

Equal parts gripping thriller and provocative commentary, “Get Out” is produced by Blumhouse’s Jason Blum, as well as Sean McKittrick, Edward H. Hamm Jr., and Peele. The film also stars Caleb Landry Jones, Stephen Root, Milton “Lil Rel” Howery, Betty Gabriel, Marcus Henderson and Lakeith Stanfield.

Among its many accolades, the film has earned a 99% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Previously, Emmy Award winner Peele was the co-star and co-creator of Comedy Central's “Key & Peele”. The hit series garnered more than 1 billion online hits, and in addition won a Peabody Award, an American Comedy Award, and earned 12 Emmy Award nominations during its five-season run. Peele also recurred on the Emmy Award-winning FX series “Fargo”, was a series regular on FOX's “MADtv” and received an Emmy Award nomination for his music video “Sad Fitty Cent.” Peele starred in the New Line feature “Keanu,” alongside Keegan-Michael Key, which Peele also produced and co-wrote with Alex Rubens. Upcoming in TV, Peele is executive producing the new Tracy Morgan comedy show for TBS."

Get Out crosses the $100 million dollar mark

By George L. Cook III AfricanAmericanReports.Com

The Jordan Peele directed movie Get Out which is an allegory of African-American strengths being siphoned for the benefit of white people, disguised as a run-of-the-mill horror flick crossed over into blockbuster status this weekend. The movie which cost $4.5 million to make has now grossed over $111 million at the box office. No matter what happens from here on out it will be most of the most profitable movies of the year.

Per BoxOfficeMojo

Universal and Blumhouse's Get Out finished third this weekend, once again outperforming expectations as it dropped just 25.4% for an estimated $21 million for a domestic cume that now stands at $111 million. Coming up with comparisons for Jordan Peele's breakout thriller is near-impossible as its week-over-week performance is mind-blowing as it is already Blumhouse Productions' second highest grossing release of all-time and showing absolutely no signs of stopping. And it can't be said often enough, the film's budget was a mere $4.5 million.
