Tyler Perry buys groceries for senior citizens at dozens of supermarkets

Tyler Perry treated seniors in Georgia and Louisiana to free groceries on Wednesday.

The director, who was born in New Orleans and lives in Atlanta, paid the grocery tabs for senior and higher-risk shoppers at 44 Kroger stores in Metro Atlanta on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the supermarket chain confirmed to ABC News.

He did the same thing for Winn-Dixie shoppers in Louisiana, a representative for the stores said.

Both grocery stores have designated shopping hours for those whom the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have said are at higher risk for developing severe illness as a result of the novel coronavirus.

“We would like to join our customers in thanking Mr. Perry for his kindness and generosity during this unprecedented pandemic,” said Felix Turner, manager of corporate affairs for Kroger’s Atlanta Division. “It was truly a pleasure to see our customers fill with joy and gratitude as the news spread throughout 44 stores across Metro Atlanta.”

Perry, 50, has not commented on the donations, and reportedly told stores to simply say the bills were paid by an anonymous "angel."

Tyler Perry dedicates a soundstage at his Atlanta studio to Diahann Carroll

Filmmaker Tyler Perry delighted a star-studded crowd of A-list celebrities and politicians Saturday when he dedicated a new soundstage at his sprawling Atlanta studio to actress Diahann Carroll during a gala ceremony at the complex.

Perry paid tribute to the groundbreaking African American actress, one day after the announcement of her death. Carroll, who made TV history as the first black actress to star in a prime time series as a career woman rather than a domestic worker in “Julia,” died at age 84 following a long bout with cancer, said her daughter Suzanne Kay.

Perry had already planned to honor Carroll with the soundstage, one of several dedicated to pioneering African American entertainers during the weekend celebration.

But while the dedication of stages to Denzel Washington, Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith and Sidney Poitier were cheered by the largely VIP crowd, the tribute to Carroll was a clear highlight.

“We are honored to have shared this planet with Diahann Carroll,” Perry said on a stage in front of the chocolate-brown structure. As the cover was removed, unveiling the name of the stage, the gathering cheered robustly as fireworks marked the moment.

Said Perry, “Let her hear you up in heaven” as clips from “Julia,” “Dynasty,” the film “Claudine,” where she played a welfare mother, and other moments from her career played on a screen.

About The Razzie Awards

Starting with an Oscar® Night ceremony so small it was actually staged in a living room alcove, The Golden Raspberry (RAZZIE®) Awards have since grown into what E! On-Line recently called "the foremost authority on all things that suck on the big screen." Annually presenting Dis-Honors for Worst Achievements in Film since 1980 in categories ranging from the obvious (Worst Picture, Actor and Actress) to the obtuse (Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel and Worst Screen Couple) The RAZZIES® today receive television, radio and newspaper coverage around the world. Their yearly bestowing of Tinsel Town's Tackiest Trophies is regularly covered by all three major worldwide newswire services (AP, UPI and Reuters) CNN, major market TV network affiliates across the U.S. and on nationwide ABC, CBS, NBC and NPR network radio news. They also receive print coverage in USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, The Hollywood Reporter, Premiere and People-on-Line Magazines. It has been estimated that the worldwide audience annually exposed to information about The RAZZIES® is over One Billion People.

Founded by Lifelong Cine-Maniac and Cynic John Wilson, author of both 1995's EVERYTHING I KNOW I LEARNED AT THE MOVIES and the recent Warner Books release THE OFFICIAL RAZZIE® MOVIE GUIDE (Listing 100 of The Berry Funniest Bad Movies Ever Made), the RAZZIES® are a light-hearted parody of award shows in general (and The Oscars in particular). The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation's well-aimed Darts of Derision have always been directed at Hollywood's High Profile Humiliations (rather than at the easier target of low-budget/drive-in fare). Worst Picture Dis-Honorees to date have included such Big Budget B.O. Bombs as CATWOMAN, HOWARD THE DUCK and JACK & JILL, as well as such Certified Camp Classics as MOMMIE DEAREST, SHOWGIRLS, BATTLEFIELD EARTH and I KNOW WHO KILLED ME. "Winners" of RAZZIE® Awards for what they would argue was acting range from such Highly Regarded But Project-Misguided stars as Roberto Benigni, Bill Cosby, Kevin Costner and Laurence Olivier to such Top Name But Talent-Challenged performers as Madonna, Burt Reynolds, The Asshole Formerly Known as Prince, Brooke Shields, Adam Sandler, RAZZIE® Poster Child Pia Zadora and All-Time RAZZIE® Champion (with an Impressive 10 "Wins," and a Staggering 30 Nominations...to date!) Sylvester Stallone.

Poised to Prick The Movie Industry's Pomp for as long as Hollywood keeps on making High-Profile Howlers, The RAZZIES® are now looking forward to their 34th Annual Ceremonies in the Spring of 2014 in H-O-L-L-Y-W-O-O-D.
