AFSCME endorses VP Kamala Harris for President of the United States

AFSCME President Lee Saunders issued the following statement announcing AFSCME’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for president:

“In a unanimous vote at a meeting this afternoon, AFSCME’s International Executive Board endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president of the United States.

“Vice President Harris is seasoned, tough and tenacious. She is a dynamic leader who has been a pro-worker champion throughout her years in elected office. She understands that unions and the working class are the engines of our economy. And she has a deep respect and appreciation for the work AFSCME members do to strengthen our communities.

“She has an extraordinary record of accomplishment over the last three and a half years. From the American Rescue Plan, which brought the economy back from the brink, to student debt forgiveness, to reining in health care costs and so much more, she has fought for us time and time and time again. As the chair of the White House Task Force on Worker Organizing and Empowerment, she developed key policy recommendations to give working people a stronger voice and a more prominent seat at the table.

“Vice President Harris is exactly the right person to meet the moment. She will fight to save American democracy, and she will carry a pro-worker message across the country, making the case that Trump’s Project 2025 would do lasting damage to working people, the economy and our nation.

“This is an inspiring and historic candidacy. Vice President Harris has been cracking the glass ceiling her whole career – now she has the opportunity to become the first woman and the first woman of color to hold the highest office in the land. And AFSCME will help her get there.

“We are all in for Kamala Harris. From today until November 5, we will mobilize in communities nationwide, turning out the vote and moving mountains to make Kamala Harris the 47th president of the United States.”

The endorsement comes after the governing 47-member executive council of the AFT met last night and voted unanimously on a resolution to endorse Harris, pending ratification by convention delegates.

“This afternoon we heard loud and clear from our members across the country—from Ohio to Montana, and New York to California—that they are all in for Kamala Harris,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten. “The educators, bus drivers, nurses, public employees, higher education workers, correctional officers and doctors of the AFT stand with Kamala. We are fully committed to this fight: united, mobilized and ready to vote in this year’s election.”
