New NAACP Data Displays Progress in Reaching Black Male Voters, Shifts in Key Attitudes and Priorities
Today, during a press briefing, the NAACP unveiled its final pre-election round of polling results outlining shifting attitudes and issue priorities of millions of Black voters. The research, in partnership with Hart Research and HIT Strategies, is part of the Association's $20 million dollar civic engagement program targeting 14.5 million voters across 12 priority states where the Black community holds significant electoral power.
NAACP President and CEO, Derrick Johnson, shared the following statement:
"This new data proves what we already know to be true - Black voters show up when they feel heard. The NAACP is proud to see the results of our $20 million investment as we continue to increase Black voter engagement and mobilization. Make no mistake - now is not the time to falter. We must be focused on people, not polls. Let's continue to knock doors, make phone calls, and send texts. Talk to your family members, your friends, and your neighbors. Our voices will only be heard when we cast our votes. The work continues."

In a powerful moment, Vic Mensa addresses the issue of reproductive rights, stating, "Many men I spoke to felt that women's reproductive rights were important to them but not their top priority. However, the fact remains that maternal mortality rates amongst Black women are exponentially higher in states with abortion bans." Mensa continues, "As Black men, our primary resp?onsibility in this humanity is to protect Black women. Protecting Black women begins and ends with listening to them about what makes them feel safe….we are seeing the emboldening of the people who seek to destroy us and to destroy our mothers, sisters, nieces, and the women in our lives, so I think that it's an issue of paramount importance to us and to me."

Rev. Dr. Lester A. McCorn named president of HBCU, Paine College
Since 2017, McCorn has served as President and Professor of Christian Leadership at Clinton College located in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He is an ordained elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. He served as pastor of churches in Boston, Connecticut, Atlanta and as Senior Pastor of the Historic 1,500-member Pennsylvania Avenue AME Zion Church in Baltimore, Maryland.
A native of Worchester, Massachusetts, McCorn earned a Doctor of Ministry from the United Theological Seminary (Dayton, OH) in 2011; a Master of Arts from Chicago Theological Seminary (Chicago, ILL) in 2003; a Master of Divinity Studies from Yale University School of Divinity (New Haven, CT) in 1999; a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from Charter Oak State College (Newington, CT) in 2001; and a Bachelor of Arts in Religion and Sociology from Morehouse College (Atlanta, GA) in 1989.

Dr. Cheryl Evans Jones, outgoing president, recently retired after 31 years of distinguished service at Paine. Dr. Jones played a pivotal role in the development of the Transformation Plan that will carry forward under the leadership of President-select McCorn. She is committed to working with the Board of Trustees to ensure a smooth and orderly transition.
Although formal introductions commenced with students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends, and local business leaders on October 18th, the College will organize additional focus group meetings with the campus family, stakeholders, business and community leaders, to share in the excitement of this new chapter in the history of the Institution. President-select McCorn will host a series of listening sessions designed to gather feedback from constituents and community partners to chart a course for Paine College.

OVER 100 STUDENT AND YOUTH LEADERS ORGANIZE MAJOR COMPLETE REPRATIONS SUMMIT
The National Reparations Institute along with 100 student and youth leaders will convene a National N’Daba (Great Gathering) Reparations Summit on Friday and Saturday November 1-2nd, 2024, at the Atlanta University Center. This year’s fourth annual National N’Daba (Great Gathering) will include a diverse and evolving group of committee members, presenters and youth advocates within the existing Complete Reparations Movement.
Recent events have catapulted the long, complicated, and often brutal history of the treatment of Blacks in America to the forefront. As a result of the historic and current impact on Black Americans’ inability to achieve and maintain equality in this country, the time is now for not only a discussion on complete reparations, but a custom model and application of the National Reparations Declaration led by youth organizers and experienced leaders.
This year our youth and attendees will benefit from this national N’Daba/Summit on complete reparations in five ways:
• The practice and strategy of functional unity and co-leadership within the existing complete
reparations movement.
• A diverse cross-section of the nation’s leading Black students, Black youth, and Black scholars
reflecting diverse theological, political, philosophical, and ideologies will participate.
• The “Collective Culture Model” will be instituted to ground us in the actual process and methodology of securing complete reparations. Select committees in education and culture, economics and investments, state and land acquisition, public and mental health, and public policy and legislation will be established.
• The introduction, organization and implementation of local organizing committees for complete
reparations will be incorporated.
• Training on organizing sustainability and wellness for co-leadership of trauma-based work.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Use Your Voice to Impact Change in the Black Community
The American Cancer Society's recently released 2024 Breast Cancer Facts and Figures report finds breast cancer mortality rates overall have dropped by 44% since 1989, averting approximately 517,900 breast cancer deaths. However, Black women are less likely to survive their breast cancer regardless of stage at diagnosis. In addition, cancer research and other discoveries have contributed to a 33 percent age adjusted reduction in cancer mortality rates since rates peaked in 1991. But despite these significant strides, Black women continue to have the highest death rate and the shortest survival of any racial or ethnic group in the U.S. for most cancers. To address these issues, many in the Black community have partnered with organizations and healthcare systems to use their voices to educate about risk factors, support those diagnosed, advocate for public policies and engage in research to improve cancer disparities.
To talk about how Black women can use their voices to address this ongoing issue, American Cancer Society and American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network volunteers Danyelle Musselman and Flecia R. Brown discuss the importance of getting involved in population research and advocating for policies that improve prevention and treatment.
Danyelle Musselman is a former national sports anchor and is married to current USC Head Men's Basketball Coach Eric Musselman. They share three children: Michael, Matthew and Mariah. Musselman has worked with ACS and ACS CAN for the past 8 years through fundraising and advocacy. She got involved after her mom's breast cancer diagnosis following the loss of her grandmother to ovarian cancer and her grandfather to lung cancer.
1 – Knowing the history of mistreatment and abuse of Black communities when it comes to health and research, why do you think it's important to get involved in cancer research?
Most of us in the Black community know the terrible history our ancestors were subjected to in the name of advancing medical knowledge, but we can't let that keep us from partnering with researchers who need our community to advance research the right way. For example, I got involved in the American Cancer Society's VOICES of Black Women study when I learned that the study was being led by two women of color along with an advisory board of Black women who are cross-disciplinary experts in Black women's health. That along with the American Cancer Society's 70-year history of funding and conducting some of the world's largest population cohort studies that have contributed to major discoveries like the linkage of cigarette smoke to lung cancer convinced me that I was in good hands.
2 – What is VOICES of Black Women and what is your pitch to Black women when encouraging them to enroll in the study?
Just that if not us, who? If we don't actively participate in improving our own outcomes, how do we get it done? We know we're directly impacted by family history or access to screening and treatment due to insurance or income, but we have to dig deeper and really uncover the behavioral and environmental causes of the disparities we're seeing. We can't do that if we can't gather the data. This study explores topics like how racism, discrimination, social support, and generational wealth impact cancer risk and health seeking behaviors. This gives us the data to reinforce the importance of addressing these issues from a health perspective. In my view, it's about legacy, how can I play a small part in improving outcomes for generations to come.
3 – How are you helping the American Cancer Society broaden its reach and get to the study's goal of 100,000 Black women?
I'm an official trained VOICES ambassador which means I've raised my hand along with over 100 other Black women nationwide to make sure other women we know are aware of the study and its importance. The research team is being very intentional about making sure this study is conducted as a partnership between the organization and Black women. Through ambassadors, we are reaching Black women wherever they are – local organizations, churches, sororities, etc. The other key point we want them to know is enrolling in the study means they are very much part of a movement to really see advancements in our own health. The American Cancer Society is committed to communicating with participants on a consistent basis regarding findings and results.
4 – Who is eligible to participate and how can a Black woman enroll?
It's key that Black women between the ages of 25 and 55 who have no cancer history except basal or squamous skin cancer are part of the study so researchers can follow their journey. You also must be in one of our 20 enrollment states or DC. They can go to voices.cancer.org to learn more. I urge the women reading this to let all the women in your network know that we must participate to change outcomes.
Flecia R. Brown has been a volunteer for ACS and ACS CAN for over 15 years. Flecia is an 18-year survivor of stage III triple-negative breast cancer. Cancer has touched Flecia's life in many ways. In addition to her own cancer journey, she has lost many family members, including her father, four uncles and her grandmother, to the disease. This has ignited Flecia's commitment to advocating for issues related to cancer prevention and early detection.
5 – Why is advocacy important to reducing cancer disparities in the Black community??
The doctor's office isn't the only place where decisions are being made about cancer. Lawmakers and policymakers in local, state and federal government also make many important decisions that have an impact on the fight against cancer. Advocacy can push lawmakers and policymakers to pass laws and fund programs that help reduce the unequal cancer burden in the Black community like those that improve access to cancer screening and treatment services.
6 – What do you do as an advocacy volunteer for ACS CAN?
When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, I was self-employed at the time and knew I wouldn't be able to afford my care. Thanks to the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) -- which provides breast and cervical screenings and treatment referral services to those who are uninsured, underinsured or have limited-income -- I was able to complete my treatments without financial burden. I advocate for funding of the NBCCEDP and tell my story because no person should have to go through cancer with financial worries. As lead ACS CAN volunteer for Georgia's 14th Congressional District. I help mobilize ACS CAN volunteers in the district in support of grassroots campaigns on issues that impact the fight against cancer. I work with them and ACS CAN staff to build relationships with elected officials in our community and advocate for laws that help reduce the cancer burden.
I am also a member of ACS CAN's Black Volunteer Caucus (BVC). The BVC works to decrease death and suffering from cancer, specifically in the Black community, and ensure no one is disadvantaged in the fight against the disease. We engage in meaningful advocacy and policy work nationally and locally such as hosting fireside chats to bring together researchers, physicians, legislators and allies to discuss the unique cancer disparities Black people face and policy solutions to address them.
7 – How can other Black women use their voice in communities to advocate for laws that help reduce the cancer burden in their communities?
We can't end cancer as we know it for everyone if we don't increase access to quality, affordable health care. There are several ways Black women can help. They can become a volunteer and work with advocacy organizations like ACS CAN to advocate for policy changes at all levels of government.
Because cancer is an election issue, they can also make their voices heard by making a plan to vote and taking the time to register to vote or check their voter registration.

South Florida Head Men’s Basketball Coach Amir Abdur-Rahim Passes Away
Abdur-Rahim, 43, was undergoing a medical procedure at a Tampa-area hospital when he passed away due to complications that arose during the procedure.

Abdur-Rahim was the American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year this past season. Following a 25-8 record, he led the Bulls to their first regular-season conference championship and to their first-ever top 25 ranking during the regular season, reaching as high as no. 24 in the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Poll.

LISC Entrepreneurs of Color Fund reaches $500 million goal
The Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) today announced that the Entrepreneurs of Color Fund (EOCF) has surpassed its $500 million goal for small business lending across the country—more than two years ahead of schedule. LISC is now expanding the program to double its impact, aiming to support $1 billion in financing for underserved businesses and communities.
"We are working to level the playing field—to connect promising but overlooked businesses to affordable financing so that whole communities can benefit from economic development and growth," said Steve Hall, LISC vice president of Small Business Lending.
EOCF is specifically designed to strengthen the local infrastructure for small business lending. It provides grants, loans and technical assistance to community development financial institutions (CDFIs) so they can better reach businesses that the traditional market does not serve.
The program particularly addresses capital gaps that affect communities of color. According to the Federal Reserve, Black and Latino small business owners are turned down for financing at more than twice the rate of their white counterparts. Those owners are also more likely to say that a lack of financing is a significant challenge to their business success.
"We want to expand financing opportunities so owners can buy a building, purchase equipment, increase their inventory or expand their staff," Hall said. "The $500 million deployed thus far is an investment in local wealth-building. It not only benefits businesses and their employees but also expands access to goods, services and jobs for residents in the communities where these firms operate."
EOCF currently partners with 24 CDFIs in 10 metro areas, including Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, New Orleans, New York City, Oakland, and Greater Washington, D.C. Together, they have supported more than 9,500 loans to small businesses in the retail, business services, food, small manufacturing and transportation sectors. Approximately half of the borrowers serve low-to-moderate income communities.
In their most recent survey of owners, EOCF found that 62 percent of firms increased their staffing after obtaining a loan, and 55 percent saw revenue growth. In addition, because of the high-touch business services provided, 82 percent of owners with a low credit score when they applied for a loan (below 651) were able to increase their score, which better positions them for conventional financing in the future.
Johnnie Akons, owner of Legacy Cutz in Chicago, is a good example. Unable to get a conventional loan to move out of rented space, he worked with LISC and EOCF to open his first real estate loan for his barbershop, grow his staff, build his financial expertise and, two years later, purchase commercial space for a second location. Both shops serve majority-Black communities.
"Even with all the hard work and everything I put into this business and this industry, it would be basically impossible to grow if I hadn't been able to get these loans," he said.
In addition to financial support, the EOCF team collaborates with local CDFIs to identify barriers that block the flow of capital—like outdated underwriting approaches or gaps in digital access—and develop products and services that respond.
"It is clearly possible to successfully implement fair and inclusive lending policies," Hall said. "But it requires a different way of thinking about the process and a willingness to step back from traditional notions about risk."
Supporters of the EOCF program include JPMorganChase and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation—which piloted the EOCF in Detroit in 2015, before LISC took the reins as program manager in 2020—as well as Fifth Third Bank, Prudential, The Rockefeller Foundation and U.S. Bank.
