The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) is an annual event dedicated to showcasing quality film and television content by and about people of African descent. Founded by Jeff Friday, it supports emerging artists to foster a wider range of images, stories and storytellers represented in the entertainment industry. The ABFF is committed to the belief that Black artists deserve the same opportunities as their mainstream counterparts, and is recognized as a vital pipeline for Black talent in front of and behind the camera. Annually held during the month of June, the festival is comprised of five action-packed days of films, engaging panels, networking events and more…from the star-studded opening night screening to the inspirational closing filmmaker ceremony.

Since its inception in 1997, the festival has been held in several locations — from Acapulco, Mexico, to Miami, Florida. The festival is today the nation’s largest gathering of Black film and TV enthusiasts, with approximately 10,000 attendees. The 22nd annual ABFF will take place in Miami Beach, June 13-17, 2018. The Founding and Presenting Sponsor is HBO®.

The ABFF encourages and rewards artistic excellence, providing a platform for more than 1,000 narrative feature films, documentaries, shorts and Web originals. Alumni success stories range from veteran producer Will Packer (Ride Along, Think Like A Man) to young auteur Ryan Coogler (Creed, Fruitvale Station) – testimony to the festival’s mission to introduce and connect talented newcomers to the industry at large.

The festival traditionally opens with a Hollywood movie premiere, followed by independent film and television screenings. In addition, each year the ABFF presents over 30 exciting events and networking activities designed to educate, nurture career development and inspire festival attendees. In 2016, the ABFF worked to find new ways to spotlight female filmmakers. In 2017, the festival focused on educating festivalgoers about career opportunities within the business and innovations in entertainment technology. In 2018, we are pleased to announce the return of the Careers in Entertainment Center, offering master classes, tech talks and careers in entertainment sessions by leading media companies , along with our traditional lineup of entertainment, celebrity conversations and talent discovery programs co-programmed with our partners HBO, Comcast NBCUniversal, Turner and TV One.

Jordan Peele Announces New Horror Film ‘Us’

Jordan Peele is coming back with a new horror film! The Academy Award-winning filmmaker recently announced that his forthcoming project, Us, will be heading to theaters early next year.
Peele made the announcement on Twitter late Tuesday night (May 8). The film poster displays black and white silhouettes of two boys that appear to be African American. While the poster is fairly simple, it still carries a haunting effect.

There is little information regarding the film’s plot and story line, but there are several reports claiming the film is looking to include an all-star cast. Peele is reportedly eying Black Panther’s Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke, as well as The Handmaid’s Tale star Elisabeth Moss, according to The Hollywood Reporter. If those contracts are signed, Nyong’o and Duke will reportedly portray one couple, while Moss will play one half of another couple.

Us will be Peele’s first feature film since his breakout blockbuster Get Out. Following its release in Feb. 2017, the racially-charged horror film quickly became a pop culture phenomenon and cleaned up at the awards shows. Peele also became the first black man to win an Academy Award for Best Screenplay.

The movie poster does not have a specific date, but Universal Pictures has reportedly has slated the picture for Mar. 15, 2019, THR reports. Check out the poster below, and stay tuned for more updates.

‘Get Out’s Jordan Peele Responds To Golden Globes Category

The decision by Jordan Peele, Blumhouse and Universal to submit their film Get Out in the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category at the Golden Globes this year has created many questions from his fanbase. Here, Peele explains why the decision was made:

The most rewarding part of making “Get Out” is the conversations the film has inspired.

When I originally heard the idea of placing it in the comedy category it didn’t register to me as an issue. I missed it. There’s no category for social thriller. So what? I moved on.

I made this movie for the loyal black horror fans who have been underrepresented for years. When people began standing up for my voice, it meant a lot. “Get Out” doesn’t just belong to me any more, now it belongs to everyone.

The reason for the visceral response to this movie being called a comedy is that we are still living in a time in which African American cries for justice aren’t being taken seriously. It’s important to acknowledge that though there are funny moments, the systemic racism that the movie is about is very real. More than anything, it shows me that film can be a force for change. At the end of the day, call “Get Out” horror, comedy, drama, action or documentary, I don’t care. Whatever you call it, just know it’s our truth.
