PEOPLE’S ORGANIZATION FOR PROGRESS SCHEDULES NAT TURNER REBELLION COMMEMORATION AND CONDEMNS ATTEMPTS TO ERASE BLACK HISTORY

The 17th annual commemoration of the Nat Turner Slave Rebellion will be held Friday, August 21, 2026, 5:00 pm at Nat Turner Park, 171 Muhammad Ali Avenue in Newark, New Jersey.

The program will take place near the entrance of the park at the intersection of Muhammad Ali Avenue and Jeliff Avenue. It is sponsored by People’s Organization for Progress (POP) and Friends of Nat Turner Park.

“We have this observance each year because we believe it is important to remember what Nat Turner and his comrades did. They took up arms and fought back against their enslavers,” Lawrence Hamm, Chairman, People’s Organization For Progress stated.

"The participants in Turner’s Rebellion struck a blow for freedom. They died in battle. Their courage and their sacrifice was a major contribution to black people’s struggle against slavery,” Hamm said.

“The Nat Turner uprising is perhaps the most well known slave rebellion in this country. Friday will mark the 195th anniversary of that event, also known as the Southampton Insurrection which began on August 21,1831 in Southampton County, Virginia,” he said.

Hamm said it was fitting to have the observance in a park named after the slave rebellion leader. Nat Turner Park was officially opened in July of 2009.

Located in the Central Ward, it covers nine acres and is the largest city owned park. It is the only park in the United States named after Nat Turner.

Turner’s uprising was one of the fiercest slave rebellions in the United States. It is said that approximately 60 to 75 enslaved and free black people took part in his revolt. As many as 65 whites may have been killed, and possibly 200 blacks, many of whom had nothing to do with the insurrection.

In the aftermath of the uprising Nat Turner was hanged and 56 other slaves were executed for their participation. Some historical accounts say that Turner was also beheaded and that his body was mutilated and dissected.

Turner’s uprising was not the only slave rebellion in the U.S. There were hundreds of slave rebellions in this country.

“Our armed resistance to slavery took place for several hundred years during the period of colonization in the western hemisphere and continued for nearly a century after American independence,” he said.

“Black people fought against slavery in Africa. We rose up against our captors on the slave ships. And we rebelled against it on the plantations, in the towns and cities of the north as well as the south,” Hamm stated.

“Nat Turner’s Rebellion and the hundreds of other slave uprisings inside and outside the United States, including the Haitian Revolution, inspired and gave momentum to the abolitionist movement, led to the Civil War, and helped bring about the end of slavery in this country,” he said.

"Perhaps the greatest slave rebellion of all was the Civil War, when more than 200,000 enslaved black men escaped from bondage and joined the ranks of the Union Army. They took up arms, helped to defeat the Confederacy and destroy the institution of chattel slavery,” he said.

“The story of slave rebellions is a glorious chapter in the ongoing struggle for freedom in America. However, this is a story that those in power want to erase from our history books,” he said.

“The Trump administration and some state governments seek to ban and erase this history from our museums, textbooks, schools and universities, cultural institutions, government agencies, news outlets, social media, and data bases,” he said.

Trump has targeted the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington and has attempted to eliminate exhibits there that are deemed to be “divisive” or “woke.”

“He wants to do away with this history because it doesn’t fit into his racist and white supremacist narrative of American history. He wants to promote a history that downplays the cruelty, injustice and horrors of slavery,” Hamm said.

“The People’s Organization For Progress is diametrically opposed to this effort to whitewash American history. This is censorship and we are absolutely opposed to it.

“We are opposed to what he and others are doing to our museums, with the curriculum at our educational institutions, and similar efforts in other areas,” he declarediv>

"Erasing a people’s history is a step toward erasing a people. This is what fascists have done in the past. This is what they are doing today. This is a form of cultural genocide,” he said.

New Book Release: Nat Turner, Black Prophet: A Visionary History By Anthony E. Kaye

Nat Turner, Black Prophet: A Visionary History by Anthony E. Kaye, a bold reinterpretation of the causes and legacy of Nat Turner's rebellion―and the new definitive account.

In August 1831, a group of enslaved people in Southampton County, Virginia, rose up to fight for their freedom. They attacked the plantations on which their enslavers lived and attempted to march on the county seat of Jerusalem, from which they planned to launch an uprising across the South. After the rebellion was suppressed, well over a hundred people, Black and white, lay dead or were hanged. As news of the revolt spread, it became apparent that it was the idea of a single man: Nat Turner. An enslaved preacher, he was as enigmatic as he was brilliant. He was also something more―a prophet, one who claimed to have received visions from the Spirit urging him to act.

Nat Turner, Black Prophet is the fullest recounting to date of Turner’s uprising, and the first that refuses to tame or overlook his divine visions. Instead, it takes those visions seriously, tracing their emergence from the world of nineteenth-century Methodism, with its revivals, camp meetings, interracial churches, and Black preachers. The rebellion and its aftermath would hasten the end of this world, as Southern states further restricted the personal freedoms of the enslaved, even as the ongoing threat of revolt shaped the country’s politics. With this work of narrative history, the late historian Anthony E. Kaye and his collaborator Gregory P. Downs have given us a new understanding of one of the nineteenth century's most decisive events.

Birth of a Nation headed toward 8 to 9 million dollar opening weekend

George L. Cook III AfricanAmericanReports.Com

The Nat Turner biopic, Birth of a Nation starring, produced, written and directed by Nate Parker opens this weekend and if websites that report on movies are correct the movie is headed for an $8-9 million dollar opening. No doubt that the recent controversy over allegations that Parker raped a female student in 1999 while he was at Penn State and the women's later suicide has and will hurt the movies opening weekend.

The movie is being released through Fox Searchlight which also released 12 Years a Slave which had a $6.6 million opening weekend back in 2013 on it's way to a $56 million dollar gross. Like 12 Years a Slave there is Oscar buzz around Birth of a Nation. Whether that helps the film is yet to be seen. Below are predictions from three websites that predict opening weekend numbers.

Variety.com project a $8 million dollar opening:

...Fox Searchlight will open the film wide, instead of building up slow with the hopes of capturing awards attention. It will kick off in 2,100 theaters and should make $8 million.

BoxOffice.com predicts a $9.5 million dollar opening.

BoxOfficeMojo.Com projects a lower 7.7 million dollar opening weekend.

If you do the math that's an average of $8.4 million.

I am a bit more optimistic about the movies opening weekend and feel that it can open in the $12-13 million dollar range because of the following reasons:

The film has some great reviews and currently holds an 78% rating on www.rottentomatoes.com

Good word of mouth could very well drive more moviegoers to the film on Saturday.

The opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture has inspired much pride among African Americans about them and their history, this could drive some to see the film about a black historical figure.

The movie has some buzz among the black college crowd. It could be like the movie Malcolm X which was released when I was in school; it was a movie that you were just supposed to go to see if you were black.(Let's just hope that put the right movie title on the tickets this time).

So will you be going to see Birth of a Nation this weekend and how much do you think it will make?

American Uprising: The Untold Story of America's Largest Slave Revolt

With the upcoming release of "Birth of a Nation" a movie about a slave rebellion led by Nat Turner you may be interested to know about the largest slave rebellion that took place in the United States. A revolt that took place in New Orleans by 500 organized slaves.

In January 1811, five hundred slaves, dressed in military uniforms and armed with guns, cane knives, and axes, rose up from the plantations around New Orleans and set out to conquer the city. Ethnically diverse, politically astute, and highly organized, this self-made army challenged not only the economic system of plantation agriculture but also American expansion. Their march represented the largest act of armed resistance against slavery in the history of the United States.

Historian Daniel Rasmussen reveals the long-forgotten history of America’s largest slave uprising, the New Orleans slave revolt of 1811. In an epic, illuminating narrative, Rasmussen offers new insight into American expansionism, the path to Civil War, and the earliest grassroots push to overcome slavery.
