Fisk University Launches First HBCU Intercollegiate Women’s Artistic Gymnastic Team

Fisk University is delighted to announce the launch of the first HBCU Intercollegiate Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Team. Woman’s gymnastics exemplifies the values of Fisk University: determination, excellence, and a commitment to a more just and equitable future. These values have consistently been at the forefront of women’s gymnastics and Fisk could not be more excited to welcome these remarkable student-athletes to the campus starting this coming fall. Fisk University has always been recognized for its commitment to academic excellence and social justice. In recent years, the University has focused on increasing its athletic profile considering the growing interest among student-athletes for an elite HBCU experience. With NBA legend Kenny Anderson and former Soccer star Desmond Armstrong as well as an outstanding woman’s volleyball program under Coach Jessica Enderle, Fisk is poised to develop elite national programs.

Fisk University has built remarkable momentum in recent years said, President Vann Newkirk. The University is committed to preparing the next generation of leaders and c-suite executives. Student-Athletes depend on an institution that enables them to translate their unique skills to professional success. Fisk’s many corporate partners are excited about the talent pipelines and the programming that has been put in place to maximize the potential of our students and our student-athletes. The recent announcement of Fisk’s partnership with the Los Angeles Lakers adds another opportunity for Fisk students to excel in the sports industry. In anticipation of this women’s gymnastics announcement, Fisk University has already begun securing scholarship funding for these future student-athletes. Fisk University also plans to host several conferences, clinics, and invitationals in partnership with organizations like Brown Girls do Gymnastics.

Black congresswomen write letter praising Pres. Biden for keeping Supreme Court pledge

A group of 14 Black Congresswomen including Rep, Cori Bush, Rep. Barbara Lee, and Rep. Joyce Beatty wrote a public letter to President Joe Biden Thursday, commending him for pledging to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court amid a conservative backlash that he was instituting a "quota" system.

President Biden Nominates Stephanie Dawkins Davis to 6th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals

President Biden has nominated U.S. District Court Judge Stephanie Dawkins Davis to serve on the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. If the U.S. Senate confirms Davis, she will become the second Black woman to serve on the 6th Circuit and the first from Michigan.

Davis, 55, is currently serving on the U.S. Courthouse in Flint.

She graduated from Wichita State University in 1989 and Washington University School of Law in St. Louis in 1992.

Davis previously served as a magistrate judge, appointed in 2016. One of her high-profile cases involved arraigning Amor Ftouhi in the 2017 terrorism and stabbing attack at Flint’s Bishop International Airport. Ftouhi was later convicted.

Davis started her career as a civil defense attorney at the firm Dickinson Wright PLLC in Detroit before joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, where she worked as a federal prosecutor for 18 years, starting in 1997. McQuade later appointed her as her executive assistant U.S. attorney in 2010 — a post she held through 2015.

Robin Holmes-Sullivan named First African American President of Lewis & Clark College

The board of trustees of Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, has named Robin Holmes-Sullivan as the institution’s 26th president. When she becomes president in July, she will be the first African American and the first woman to lead the college in its 155-year history.

“I am so proud that my becoming president of Lewis & Clark can influence and inspire a generation of young people to see that they can dream big; that when they speak, people will listen; and that when they lead, people will follow,” Dr. Holmes-Sullivan said.

Lewis & Clark College enrolls about 1,800 undergraduate students and more than 1,300 graduate students. African Americans make up just 2 percent of the undergraduate student body.

Dr. Homes-Sullivan is currently the vice president for student life and dean of students at the college. She came to Lewis & Clark in 2019 from the University of California, where she served as vice president for student affairs overseeing the undergraduate admissions process and other student-related issues for the 10-campus, 200,000-student system. Prior to her time at the University of California, Holmes-Sullivan spent 27 years at the University of Oregon, working her way up from a position as a clinical coordinator in the counseling center to vice president of student life.

Dr. Holmes-Sullivan earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in experimental psychology from California State University at Fullerton. She holds a second master’s degree and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional.
