NAACP Supports Lawmakers Now Reinstated to Tennessee House of Representatives

On Thursday, April 6, Tennessee State Representatives Justin Jones and Justin Pearson were expelled from the Tennessee House of Representatives for their participation in a demonstration in support of gun reform. Following widespread public outcry calling for the reappointment of the two young Black politicians, Rep. Jones was temporarily reinstated to his position on April 10th and Rep. Pearson was temporarily reinstated on April 12th. NAACP President & CEO, Derrick Johnson released this statement in response:

"This is America - where you receive more legislative 'action' for calling out the need for gun control than for actually addressing the loss of life as a result of gun violence. It is disappointing, but not surprising, to know that some lawmakers in Tennessee would rather spend precious time removing these brave young Black men from their duly elected positions than take a stance against inadequate gun policies. Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson have demonstrated incredible leadership and commitment to protecting their constituents and our democracy through their unwavering support of gun reform in the absence of action from their state-level peers and legislative colleagues at the federal level."

Man who shot Ralph Yarl charged with first-degree assault

The Clay County prosecutor has charged an 84-year-old man in the shooting of a Kansas City 16-year-old who went to the wrong address to pick up his siblings last week.

Clay County Prosecutor Zachary Thompson announced Andrew Lester has been charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. A warrant has been issued for the man’s arrest; his bond has been set at $200,000.

Court documents say Lester fired through a glass door and Yarl did not enter the home, Thompson said Monday.

“As the prosecutor of Clay County, I can tell you there was a racial component,” Thompson said.

The prosecutor said Lester used a .32 revolver, but he did not have any information on if the gun was registered or not.

The news came shortly after the Kansas City Police Department said it has submitted its case file on the shooting of Ralph Yarl to the Clay County Prosecutor’s Office to review for possible charges.

Temple University names JoAnne Epps acting president

Temple University’s Board of Trustees announced today the appointment of JoAnne A. Epps as Temple’s acting president. Epps will begin serving in this role immediately.   

A member of the Temple faculty for more than 30 years, Epps has more than 15 years in leadership roles with the university, including dean of the Beasley School of Law, and executive vice president and provost, and Temple’s chief academic officer. Prior to her time at Temple, Epps served as an assistant U.S. attorney in Philadelphia and a deputy city attorney in Los Angeles. 

“There is no one more qualified than JoAnne to assume the role of acting president during this critical moment for our university,” said board Chair Mitchell Morgan. “Her lifelong dedication to Temple and the greater Philadelphia community make us extremely confident in JoAnne’s ability to unite the Temple community and lead a focused effort on developing and implementing solutions to our key challenges. We believe her hands-on approach and high level of engagement across the institution will have an immediate impact and enable us to move forward.” 

“In the last two weeks, individuals from across the university reached out with their thoughts and ideas on the most important leadership qualities and priorities necessary to move Temple forward,” continued Morgan. “It was heartening to hear from so many Deans, faculty members, staff, elected officials, and community and regional leaders. Their thoughts were extremely valuable to us in thinking through the best choice for an acting president.”

Acting President Epps has requested that the Special Committee of the Board continue its work, in support of her administration, as it seeks to address the primary challenges of safety and enrollment. 

Although Epps has agreed to serve until a new president is appointed, the Board of Trustees intends to initiate a thorough, formal search process promptly. More information about the process will be forthcoming.
