Stacey Abrams Statement on Brian Kemp’s Latest Hospital Closure Failure

Democratic nominee for governor Stacey Abrams released the following statement after news that Brian Kemp’s agenda might shut down Atlanta Medical Center:

“Brian Kemp has once again placed his extremist agenda before the lives of Georgians. For the second time this year, a hospital will likely turn away patients, right in the heart of Atlanta. Sadly, whether you live in rural, urban or suburban Georgia, Kemp has united every region in a healthcare crisis of spiraling costs and declining access. His continued refusal to expand Medicaid will guarantee more hospitals shut down, and last-minute stop-gap funding or Medicaid waiver half-measures will not address the core, systemic issues facing Georgia’s imploding public health system. If the Atlanta Medical Center shutters completely or shuts down key services, this will be the sixth hospital to turn away patients on his watch. Every hospital that continues to serve patients who cannot pay because Kemp refuses to accept our tax dollars should be commended. But it is shameful – but not surprising – that Brian Kemp puts his far right partisan politics over what is best for Georgians, who desperately need their health care costs to go down and to have access to medical care.”

Under Brian Kemp, in addition to the potential closure of AMC, there are an estimated 19 rural Georgia hospitals at risk of closing any day, as Kemp refuses to fully expand Medicaid. Today’s announcement marks the sixth hospital that might close under Kemp’s watch – but this crisis continues to unfold with many more at risk due to Kemp’s dangerous agenda.

Stacey Abrams Pauses Georgia Campaign Fundraising to Aid Abortion Groups

Stacey Abrams, who is poised to become Georgia’s Democratic nominee for governor, temporarily suspended campaign fundraising to focus on collecting money for abortion-rights groups in the state.

The move follows the leak of a U.S. Supreme Court draft opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 ruling that legalized abortion.

Abrams said she will commit her fundraising to the Feminist Women’s Health Center, SisterSong, ARC Southeast, Planned Parenthood Southeast and NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia. Her plan was reported earlier by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The leaked opinion by Justice Samuel Alito was published Monday night by Politico, which also reported that four other justices were prepared to scrap the Roe precedent. Chief Justice John Roberts confirmed the authenticity of the draft on Tuesday.

The news is shaking up Georgia politics, with Abrams promising to make protecting abortion access a central part of her campaign and Republicans -- including Donald Trump-endorsed gubernatorial candidate David Perdue -- pledging to work to outlaw abortion in the state altogether.

Rep. Maxine Waters On Joe Biden: 'He Can't Go Home Without A Black Woman VP'

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) gave her thoughts about Joe Biden’s potential vice president pick on Friday during an ESSENCE Live townhall, saying she strongly believes Biden is going to pick a Black woman as his running mate.

“Let me guarantee you this, based on everything that I know and understand, and the help that [Biden] has already gotten from the Black community…he can’t go home without a Black woman being VP,” Waters said confidently. “We’re going to have a Black woman VP.”

Of course, Biden has yet to confirm his choice even as the Democratic National Convention draws closer, and more and more Americans continue to watch with a close eye as he is the presumptive nominee.

Names floated around as a potential pick include Sens. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), as well as several accomplished Black women like former national security advisor Susan Rice, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.)

Amy Klobuchar drops out VP contention says Biden should choose a woman of color

Sen. Amy Klobuchar on Thursday night removed herself from consideration to be Joe Biden's running mate, citing the ongoing national discussion about racial injustice and police brutality to suggest the former vice president should choose a woman of color.

"This is a historic moment, and America must seize on this moment. And I truly believe as, I actually told the vice president last night when I called him, that I think this is a moment to put a woman of color on that ticket," Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat, told MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell.

"And there are so many incredibly qualified women, but if you want to heal this nation right now, my party ... this is sure a hell of a way to do it."

More than one African American woman' being considered for VIce President

Former Vice President Joe Biden said Friday that more than one African American woman is being considered to be his running mate.

Biden shared the detail during an interview on MSNBC as host Craig Melvin pressed him about renewed speculation about who might be his No. 2 on the Democratic ticket.

Melvin questioned whether demonstrations in Minneapolis and other cities across the country protesting police-involved deaths of unarmed black people were influencing Biden's decision.

“That is not the only criteria to determine who will be the vice president of the United States of America that I'll choose as a running mate. It is just beginning, the process. I guarantee you, there are more — there's more than one — there's more than one African American woman being considered for vice president," he added. "I promise you that.”

Among those floated as possible running mates are Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams and Rep. Val Demings (D-Fla.), all of whom are black, though Biden is also known to be considering a broad swath of women.

Stacey Abrams Says She Could Help Biden By Turning Out More Black Voters

Stacey Abrams, who previously served as the minority leader in the Georgia state House of Representatives, has repeatedly voiced her interest in running as the Democratic Party's vice-presidential candidate. The politician from Georgia reasserted that desire and explained why she'd make a good partner for Biden during an interview with CNN's David Axelrod on the Thursday episode of his podcast The Axe Files.

"I have the deepest respect for every woman who is being talked about and who should be considered for this post," Abrams told Axelrod. "But I know that for communities of color, particularly for the black community, there has got to be a recognition that their needs are met. And we have to have candidates who are able to not only speak to them, but turn them out."

"There has to be an intentionality to turning them out. A lot of folks can do that. I'm one of those people," she said. "And I have proven it by turning out more people of color in an election than anyone in 2018 did. Not by race, but by raw number."
