The agreement between ABC News and TSU was announced on ABC’s “This Week” show with George Stephanopoulos on Sunday, July 21. “As the heart and soul of Houston, Texas Southern University is proud to serve as the venue for for such a prestigious event,” said TSU President Dr. Austin A. Lane. “Not only does this reflect positively on the university and the City of Houston, it also provides our students with opportunities to work directly with ABC and its partners to gain valuable experience throughout the process. The agreement between ABC News and TSU includes H&PE Arena for the debate itself, as well as the Student Recreation Center, which will serve as a media center throughout the week of Sept. 9-13. “Our students will gain valuable experience leading up to – and during – the event,” added Dr. Lane. “ABC will provide ‘real world’ work experiences for students who will serve as interns, runners, pages, etc., for both ABC and its partners throughout the event. We are working with our schools of Communications and Public Affairs specifically to make sure our students are involved and engaged in this event from a learning perspective. Likewise, our public broadcast radio station, KTSU 90.9 FM, and KTSU2 student streaming station will be involved on the media side.

Dr. Jackson completed both her bachelor's degree in zoology, and doctor of dental surgery degree at Howard University. She then completed a certificate in general dentistry at Howard University Hospital, and certificate and master of science degree in prosthodontics at Georgetown University School of Dentistry.
Through more than 30 years of service at Howard University, Dr. Jackson has served in positions of increasing responsibility at the college including most recently as interim dean, associate dean of clinical affairs and professor and chair of the Department of Prosthodontics.

Four officers accused of lying about the circumstances around the fatal shooting of a black teen have been fired by the Chicago Police Board.
The 2014 killing of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, which was captured on police video camera, sparked months of protests and became emblematic of longstanding police abuse in America’s third-largest city.
A jury in October convicted a white police officer, Jason Van Dyke, of second-degree murder for firing 16 bullets into McDonald, most of which struck the teen after he fell to the ground.
The Police Board said that Sergeant Stephen Franko and three other officers had exaggerated the threat posed by McDonald in order to cover for Van Dyke, according to a decision handed down Thursday.
“Their conduct is antithetical to that expected and required of a sworn law enforcement officer, who at all times has a duty to act with honesty and integrity and to accurately and completely report their observations,“ the board said in a statement.

On Tuesday, July 16, 2019, Congressman Al Green announced his renewed effort to impeach the President of the United States for his bigotry causing harm to society. Pernell Whitaker known BKA as "Sweet Pea," to boxing fans, a longtime pound for pound king, and one of the greatest boxers in history, was killed Sunday night when he was hit by a car in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was 55.
The Virginia Beach Police Department said the incident remains an active investigation but that Whitaker was apparently hit by a vehicle at around 10 p.m. Sunday when he was walking at an intersection.
Whitaker, who was elected into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2006, won world titles in four weight classes. He was the undisputed lightweight world champion and also won titles at junior welterweight, welterweight and junior middleweight as one of the dominant forces in boxing for much of the 1980s and 1990s. He won a gold medal at the 1984 Olympics.
Whitaker is survived by his wife Rovanda, and three of the four children they had together -- Pernell Jr. died a few years ago -- and a daughter from a previous relationship.

Rapid City, S.D., unveiled a life-size statue of former President Obama and his daughter Sasha on Saturday afternoon.
The bronze statue is the latest addition to the town's City of Presidents, which places life-size statues of past U.S. presidents along the streets and sidewalks of Rapid City.
The statue, was constructed by local artist James Van Nuys, and took roughly two years to complete.
Many different designs were pondered over before selecting the one of Pres. Obama and his daughter, Sasha.
The choice settled on an iconic photo of Obama with his younger daughter Sasha as he took the stage at his first inauguration as the country’s first black president.
“The idea of a man and his daughter was meaningful to me because my daughter was literally my best friend,” said artist James Van Nuys, who has designed three other presidential statues.
Although House leadership and the four congresswomen known collectively as "The Squad," Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (Minn.), Ayanna Pressley (Mass.) and Rashida Tlaib (Mich.) are not seeing eye to eye right now, Rep. Hakeem Jefferies, the chairman of the House Democratic Caucus (the fifth leadership spot)) took to Twitter to defend them against a vile and racist attack by Trump.

But the service organization and its caterer, Centerplate, weren't about to let the meals that had been prepared for members go to waste. The group donated 17,000 meals to the Second Harvest Food Bank of South Louisiana, which will store them in a cooler through the storm, and then give them to residents who weather Barry, the food bank said Friday in a Facebook post.
"We are delighted that Centerplate donated the food we purchased making it available as a result of us terminating our convention early," the sorority's national president and CEO, Beverly Smith, said in a statement. "With 16,000 attendees and two food functions canceled -- our Sisterhood Luncheon and closing Soiree Celebration -- there was inordinate amounts of food that would have been wasted. Kudos to Centerplate."
Second Harvest Food Bank spokesman Jay Vise thanked the sorority for its donation.
"It's really heartwarming for these ladies ... when their major conference gets canceled, the first thing they thought of was to help other people," Vise said.
Founded in 1913, Delta Sigma Theta is a predominantly black sorority with more than 200,000 members nationwide.
Queens (NY) Democratic boss and 11-term congressman Greg Meeks took a thinly-veiled jab at fellow Big Apple Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Friday, urging her to back off her racially-tinged feud with party leaders or face a fight for her political life.
In an interview with the Daily News, Meeks fumed over Ocasio-Cortez’s recent racial beef with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and pushed back against her left-wing allies at Justice Democrats for openly backing insurgent candidates trying to unseat members of the Congressional Black Caucus.
He also said the CBC can play the same game.

Meeks stressed there weren’t any current plans to challenge Ocasio-Cortez, but left the door open: "If you get in the ring, expect that people are going to start throwing punches.”
The Justice Democrats, a progressive political action committee that is closely aligned with Ocasio-Cortez and propelled her to victory in 2018, has already backed primary challenges against CBC members, including 10-term Rep. Lacy Clay (D-Mo.).
Meeks said the Justice Democrats and left-leaning lawmakers may be shooting the party in the foot.
“I would hope that these individuals would realize who the opposition is here,” Meeks said, referring to Republicans. “The focus should be to keep the majority, grow the majority and win the presidency.”
